A biomaterial is any matter, surface, or construct that interacts with biological systems. Biomaterials can be derived either from nature or synthesized in the laboratory using a variety of chemical approaches utilising metallic components or ceramics. Biomaterials are often used for medical applications, either as a whole or part of a living structure, for example in a heart valve, or in a biomedical device, for example a hip implant.
