LCN Mission and Challenges

The LCN fosters interdisciplinary collaborations between researchers from different fields, including physics, chemistry, engineering, and medicine. It prioritises partnerships with industry and government organisations to ensure that its research has a tangible impact on society. It also leverages cutting-edge technology platforms like machine learning and data analytics to accelerate its research and development efforts. To deliver excellent science and offer solutions to real-world problems, LCN research fits broadly into three themes:

Information and Communications Technology: Development of new materials for computer chips and other electronic devices, as well as the creation of new data storage technologies that rely on nanoscale structures for innovative and transformative solutions for data processing, storage, and communication. The work in this field advances the frontiers of information science and technology and creates new opportunities for economic and societal development.

Healthcare: Development of new drug delivery systems that use nanoparticles to target specific cells in the body and the creation of new medical devices and diagnostic tools that rely on nanotechnology leading to innovative and effective solutions for disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Prioritising new and existing partnerships with healthcare providers ensures that research is translated into real-world applications that benefit patients.

Planetcare: Development of new materials that are more sustainable and eco-friendly, as well as the creation of new technologies that can help reduce carbon emissions and promote renewable energy to help mitigate the impact of human activities on the environment. By leveraging the unique properties of nanomaterials, researchers can develop innovative solutions for sustainable development and a healthier planet.
