Nicholas Harrison was awarded a PhD in the Statistical Mechanics of Disordered alloys by The University of Birmingham in 1989. He was appointed in 1989 as a research scientist at Daresbury Laboratory responsible for the development of advanced electronic structure methods for condensed matter studies. From 1990 to 1993 he worked with ICI Ltd on a number of problems arising from product development and materials optimization. In 1994 he was seconded to Pacific Northwest Laboratories in Washington State. In 2000 he was jointly appointed as Professor of Computational Materials Science at Imperial College London, in 2006 appointed as the Head of the STFC’s Energy Futures Programme. Harrison has published over 150 articles on the development and use of quantum mechanics to predict material properties. His interests include photovoltaic and photocatalytic materials, correlated electron systems, spin transport and spintronics and oxide surface structure and chemisty. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Chemistry, and a member of the RCUK Scientific Advisory Committee on Energy Research and Technology.
