Abstract: Metamorphism of rocks destroys ancient microfossils and converts biomass into graphite, such that biological signatures become challenging to recognize from graphite that sourced non-biological carbon. This talk will focus on selected examples of metamorphosed sedimentary rocks analysed by a range of correlated micro-analytical techniques using ion, photon, and electron beams.  Results of this correlated microscopy performed on graphitic carbon from some of the oldest rocks on Earth will be discussed to determine whether the carbon they contain was biological in origin.
