Nanotechnology in Miniature

Researchers from the LCN recently took part in an exhibition dedicated to all things little. Entitled ‘Miniatures’, the exhibition was held at the Wellcome Collection, Euston Road and featured Bonsai trees, painted rice grains, lucky charms and even a flea circus.

Exploring the invisible, the LCN’s Cyrus Hirjibehedin, Philipp Studer, Ben Warner, Jenny Oberg and Toby Gill entertained and enlightened a largely non-scientific audience by explaining the concepts of nanotechnology. This included viewing some of their samples through an optical microscope and demonstrating the ‘magic’ of a magnet floating above a superconductor in liquid nitrogen (the Meissner effect).
