The LCN hosted HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, President of the Royal Scientific Society Jordan, during her recent visit to London.  Accompanying her Highness were senior members of the Royal Scientific Society and the Princess’s architectural advisors, who were interested in the interplay between scientific research and the design of the LCN facility.

During her visit, Her Highness met with a number of researchers, whose equipment had an impact on the design of the building. Her Highness wished to see how laboratories can be adapted according to the specific requirements of the experiment and machinery. Touring the building, she was shown the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) facility by Dr. Steven Schofield, who explained how the STM lab was specifically designed to incorporate large and highly sensitive equipment. Ms Angie Ma, in the Optics lab, described her  optical fibre technology project and how the design, for example, of the service delivery system, enables her research.  Her Highness was then taken to see the Service Corridors and LCN cleanrooms, before returning to Jordan. We are sure she returned with a deep appreciation of the role of the design of the LCN building, and its position, central to its people and the research undertaken here.
