Abstract: A key requirement of high duty components in gas turbine aero-engines is that they operate safely within their lifetime. This means that even alloys which have been used for many years still need to be better understood in terms of their behaviour under engine operating conditions. Detailed characterisation techniques are being used to inform understanding of how these alloys perform and how we can better optimise their processing routes to enhance performance. Examples of detailed characterisation work will be given and put into an engineering context.
